2009年9月11日 ，臼井儀人登山後失蹤，手提電話亦無人接聽。12日，他的家人報警求助。 根據日本群馬縣警方表示，臼井失蹤前，曾經向家人表示，將會去群馬、長野兩縣之間的荒船山；而臼井儀人平日經常獨自行山。9月19日上午，一位58歲的男性登山者報警指在荒船山發現一名受傷者。日本警方接報後在現場發現一具男性遺體，且服裝跟身材與臼井儀人相似。9月20日，日本警方將遺體運出，當時這具遺體已經破碎，穿著T恤衫的上半身還在，下半身已不見。經家人鑑別，確認遺體正是臼井，由於無發現遺書，其隨身物品亦完好，警方已排除自殺及他殺之可能，初步相信是山路無圍欄而失足墜崖致死。20日稍晚時間，經法醫研判，臼井儀人死亡時間為9月11日下午，死因為墜崖失救。
