俗話說，太陽底下沒有新鮮事！現在在家裡養狗、貓、兔、蜥蜴甚至是蛇似乎已經不稀奇，因為現在竟然有人願意把長頸鹿帶回家當作寵物來飼養，這不是誇張的寓言故事，而是發生在我們生活裡的真實事件。
在南非有對夫婦Colin和Theony McRae養了一隻長頸鹿當寵物，並且替牠取名為「Fenne」。「Fenne」是一隻被母親遺棄的孤兒，幸運地被McRae的兒子Craig在南非的灌木叢裡發現時，其生命已經奄奄一息，Craig見狀趕緊通知動物之家人員前來救援。
「Fenne」在Craig的細心照顧下，慢慢恢復了健康，並且還將其領養回家當寵物飼養。
這家人還特地準備自家位於鄉下大農場的一處空間設為「Fenne」居住的地方， 個性溫和的「Fenne」因為體型太過龐大，有時試著想進入屋內時，就變得十分困難。
McRae表示，儘管如此，當「Fenne」想要走進屋內時，就會拼命將自己的頭壓低，努力「擠」進家門拜訪我們。
牠成功進到屋內後，有時McRae一家人還是得把牠趕出去，因為牠的體型造成其行動變得很不靈活，加上「Fenne」的蹄踩在地板磁磚上時，會使牠在行走時打滑沒辦法站穩。 「為了讓牠不要因為跌倒摔斷了腿，我們就必須非常小心牠的一舉一動。」
不過，若讓「Fenne」行走在地毯上，危險就會降低，但是有時牠得靠自己閃過一些傢俱。McRae表示，雖然牠脖子長，但是沒有撞傷過頭，反之，是十分謹慎的彎下身去躲避危險的物品。
「Fenne」的到來也製造了不少趣事。「牠是一隻極具好奇心的動物，要小心牠隨時會來到你身邊，然後將蹄踩在你的腳上」，McRae表示，「牠的重量比一個人的體重還要重得多，當牠踩到你的時候，你一定可以立即有知覺。」
不過，這還不是McRae最印象深刻的記憶。有次「Fenne」還跑進了浴室，差點讓客人大叫「非禮」，「之前有個女客人在我們家洗澡，門沒有鎖好，讓牠有機會打開門向她打招呼。」當時，這位女客人對這樣的「不期而遇」感到十分吃驚。
「Fenne」就像是這家人的一份子，McRae說，我們一家人都非常的愛牠，就像牠喜歡我們一樣。當這家人正在享用餐點或是遊樂時，也總會看到「Fenne」參與其中的身影。
