KTM plans to put company back on profitability track

The electric train sets (ETS) that now ply the route are on the books of another government company and not on KTM’s balance sheet. KTM president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the company was looking at making an operating profit from the Ipoh-KL route once its new fare was accepted.

Its proposed fare needs ministerial approval, which has so far not been forthcoming as the Government said it wanted to cap the cost of a ticket to RM30 to encourage usage of trains.

Aminuddin said KTM had ordered 40 new locomotives to cater for the upgraded rail service on completion of the electrified double tracking project. KTM expects to see a bump in revenue and usage of the expanded tracks once the service starts in 2014.os.tvboxnow.com. R+ R; P5 l; d2 S5 B
The MMC Corp-Gamuda consortium had won the job for the double tracking and electrification of the 329km Ipoh-Padang Besar stretch for RM12.5bil. Work is 43% complete as at July 2010. The Ipoh-Padang Besar project is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.
9 o% j0 M1 [' OUpgrades on other parts of the rail network in Peninsular Malaysia are also being done. Ircon International Ltd has bagged the RM3.45bil Seremban-Gemas electrified double-tracking project which is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The cost of that project is reported at RM8bil and has been slotted for completion under the 10th Malaysia Plan. Once the double tracking routes are opened, KTM will run similar electric train sets between those destinations. Aminuddin said KTM was seeing an annual growth in traffic of 10% per annum and was expecting that growth rate to increase once electric trains start plying the electrified double tracking route.3 A7 ?; J9 a7 S1 M4 H6 a$ A
He said demand for freight services, which now account for the bulk of KTM’s revenue, along the double tracking project would increase. He said there was huge demand for freight services into Malaysia from southern Thailand.
