巨人其實是真實存在過的，這一點西方文化中最重要最神聖的典籍《聖經》中就有記載。

! [6 K7 d3 D9 t4 h" P( `《舊約聖經》中《撒母耳記上》曾記載過大衛殺死一個名叫歌利亞 (Goliath)的巨人，他的身高是六肘零一虎口(six cubits and a span)。《聖經》中肘的算法有幾種，最短的一種是一尺半為一肘，六肘便等於九尺。六肘零一虎口高，歌利亞至少有三米多高了！但這卻不是《聖經》中關於巨人唯一的記載。

+ P, O0 G, j' z$ G同樣是《舊約聖經》中的《民數記》則記載摩西帶猶太人出埃及之後，曾派人到迦南地探路，瞭解當地的情況。探子們回報說：
4 A3 Q, c1 U6 Q$ q3 i+ K「那地的民強壯，城邑也堅固寬大，並且我們在那裡看見了亞衲族的人」(the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there)。
