1978年10月21日，一名澳洲的飛行員斐德列克·瓦倫提斯（Frederick Valentich）駕駛他的塞斯納（Cessna182L）單螺旋槳小型飛機，在飛往澳洲國王島（King Island）的一次例行貨運航班途中，他告知地面航管員說，他目擊一個“不是飛機”的不明飛行體盤旋在他的飛機前方，但是之後無線電通訊中斷，音訊全無，在經過大規模的搜救行動之後，仍未找到飛機和飛行員的任何蹤跡。

根據澳洲先驅太陽報（heraldsun）在8月9日的報導，維多利亞UFO行動組織（The Victorian UFO Action group）獲得了一個新的線索，希望能夠尋找到阿德萊德（Adelaide）附近一位農民，據稱在瓦倫提斯失蹤以後的早上，這名農民曾親眼目睹30米的飛船盤旋在他的住宅上空，當時這架塞斯納飛機緊靠在飛船的一側，並且在漏油，農夫甚至將飛機的註冊號碼記下來，塗寫在他的拖拉機上，但是後來他絕口不再提起這件事，因為他告訴幾個朋友竟遭到朋友的嘲笑。
