The homeless woman who died in Exeter was killed at 11.50pm on Saturday night when a large spruce tree collapsed on Western Way, Exeter, seriously injuring two other people.

She said officers were on the scene almost immediately, but there was very little that could be done for the woman and that her injuries were fatal 'almost instantaneously.'
Relatives have been informed of her death but formal identification has not yet taken place, police said yesterday. The two men also involved in the incident, aged 27 and 35, received medical treatment but were not seriously injured.

Yesterday Yorkshire, Warwickshire and Wiltshire were also badly affected by the deluges. Environment Minister Richard Benyon met people in Malmesbury where 3ft of water was reported in some parts of the Wiltshire town.
He described the clear-up work as 'heroic', adding: 'While many houses have been flooded, some haven't because of the efforts of these people.

Both the RAC and AA breakdown services reported surges in flood-related call-outs as roads and highways across the country were closed due to perilous standing water. The AA answered about 12,000 breakdowns yesterday, including almost 700 cases of people stuck in flood water or mud, a spokesman said.

The clean-up operation has already begun in earnest across Cornwall, one of the worst-hit areas. At one point, the Environment Agency placed a severe weather warning on the area around Helston's River Cober - one of four such alerts issued nationally over the weekend - indicating a real risk to life.7 K) C' d: a# n/ C  N9 _

David Owens, duty director for Cornwall Council, earlier told the BBC that the rest centres were all stood down after residents had left.
He said: 'We did have a couple of residents in Mevagissey where we had some 25 properties flooded. We didn't have any attendance in Millbrook where we had approximately 40 properties flooded. Those situations are really improving.'
Mr Owens said there had been more than 400 staff from the council, police, fire services and the Environment Agency working during the night, and numbers were reduced as weather began to clear from the west.
