Werder, that was simply phenomenal!! Thanks to a stunning performance from the first to the last minute on the eighth match day of the season, Werder steam-rolled Armenia Bielefeld to run out 8:1 winners. Peter Niemeyer opened the scoring after 17 minutes with a strike from 16 meters. In the 35th minute, Hugo Almeida doubled the Green-Whites lead , heading home from a Boubocar Sanogo delivery. Artur Wichniarek reduced the deficit two minutes later but a brace from Sanogo before the break boosted Werder’s confidence and after the break Thomas Schaaf’s men stepped up a gear and tortured their guests. On the hour Per Mertesacker got on the score sheet and six minutes later, substitute Markus Rosenberg joined him. With five minutes to go, Diego converted a free kick and three minutes later, Hugo Almeida struck again to make the final score 8:1 – a result much to the pleasure of the bulk of the 40,120 fans at the Weser Stadium.
