It is really enjoyable to rent a car in Hokkaido and free to drive to any place anytime as you like. The GPS is clear and update although it is in Japanese. Using map code in GPS will give you accurate location of your destination. Using Map Code is better than telephone number.

BTW, many tourist spots allow free parking. Hokkaido is an ideal place for a self-driving tour.
