From what I know, by using the original software is always the best.
Example, if taken RAW in Canon (CR2). Use DPP (Digital Photo Professional) to convert is the best, the colour wil be 100% same as what you see at your LCD and the sharpness is perfect.

For RAW in Nikon (NEF). Use ViewNX or CaptureNX.

One things that is not good about original software is.... the speed is slow.
