美國國家氣象局統計顯示，歷來紐約在1月6日的平均溫度為-3度至2度，當地最熱的1月出現在1950年，氣溫達22度。氣象學家費爾特根解釋說：「這非常簡單：厄爾尼諾現象。」厄爾尼諾是有關太平洋海水變暖的循環現象，是導致地球溫度上升及氣候突變的元兇。
