Laursen tells Villa to spend big

Aston Villa defender Martin Laursen fears his club could fall behind the Premier League pace-setters unless the club’s owner Randy Lerner digs deep in his pockets this summer.
Villa have made great progress under manager Martin O’Neill, going from 16th in the league to sixth in the space of three years.
O’Neill’s achievement is all the more notable because he used the joint fewest number of players of any side last season but the former Celtic boss has already discussed the need to add numbers to a small squad.
Villa will also be competing in the Uefa Cup next season provided they negotiate the Intertoto and Laursen believes Lerner may have to spend big this summer.
Laursen told the Express and Star: “The requirement is to get good players and they are not cheap. So we need a lot of money to buy good players and to buy the right players.
“That is the manager’s job but he needs a lot of money because if not, we can’t compete with the big clubs.
