Gibbs - We'll take anyone in Carling Cup - 2 Nov 2007
Kieran Gibbs says the Arsenal youngsters fear no-one in Saturday’s Carling Cup draw.
Arsène Wenger’s side humbled Sheffield United 3-0 on Wednesday night to reach the last eight. Unusually all of the remaining sides hail from the Premier League. But Gibbs, 18, believes there is nothing to be concerned about.
“It was a great performance from everyone at Sheffield United,” he said. "The team spirit is too good to be scared of anyone in the draw so we look forward to playing them, whoever it is.”
The Bramall Lane tie was Gibbs’ full debut. He did get a run-out at Emirates Cup in his more usual position on the left wing. However Wenger chose to throw him in at left-back on Wednesday.
“The boss obviously thought I could do a job and it was up to me to just do my best.” Said Gibbs
“I was very pleased to play. It has been a long journey so far. My first academy was Wimbledon. I was there till I was about 13 until they moved to Milton Keynes. I did not want to do the travelling or move away so young. Lucky I got scouted in a match by Arsenal and I signed as a scholar. I worked my way through, signed my professional contract a year early then just kept playing with the Reserves and in Youth Cup.”
Gibbs has been dubbed “a little Ryan Giggs” by Wenger and he showed little of the Welshman’s ingenuity with a raking ball forward for Eduardo to score Arsenal’s second in the 50th minute.
“The boss has said that before and it is such a compliment," smiled Gibbs. "He's a player who has done so much. I'll take that into games and it will give me confidence.
“As for the pass, I just looked up and saw him in a great position. It was just a matter of putting it through then he took a touch and scored." |
