France made easy meat of a stunned-looking Argentina in their opening match of Group B in Monterrey. Yassine Benzia scored a pair of goals in the contest, which the European side dominated from the opening whistle at the Estadio Universitario.
The French came out flying and dominated a surprisingly uninspired Argentina in the first half from Monterrey. Playing in a forward-looking 4-3-3 formation, the Europeans gave Argentina no chance in the opening period, controlling the ball and turning their possession into a bunch of goals in the last ten minutes of the opening period. The Argentinians had no answer to the speed, quick passing and organisation of the French.
The first goal came after 35 minutes, and was thoroughly deserved. Lenny Nangis put on a brilliant display of dribbling on the right side and his cross was met perfectly by Yassine Benzia, who hammered low and into the corner of the net. Nangis was involved again in the second goal, this time his cross was controlled and volleyed home easily by Sébastien Haller, who was in superb form throughout the game. The French weren’t done yet either, as Benzia netted his second just before the interval after Haller turned provider.
The second period was more of the same in terms of possession, with Argentina – who only arrived in Mexico yesterday due to volcanic ash over South America –unable to get a foothold in the contest. The French, however, were unable to add to their already bloated lead in what was every inch a one-sided contest.
With the result, the French shoot to the top of the section and will next meet East Asian hopefuls Japan on 21 June. Argentina, who have never won a U-17 world crown, will be looking to rebound in their next test, a match with CONCACAF first-timers Jamaica on the same day.
