The spirit of expansionism and the legitimacy of claiming the whole south china sea. I wonder how similar is this logic against Japanese literature on co-prosperity sphere, justification of claiming Manchuria...

Is China going through the same thing, mixing up nationalism and militarism? Stirring up popularism on expansion before the invasions.

China during Mongolian dynasty, the territory goes all the way to Europe. Does that justify China to claim back the territory up to Poland?

Chinese naval power probably can defeat US, India, Vietnam or anyone else can throw in right now? But does it worth it. Do you really want to risk the economic prosperity for some territorial gain and natural resource? This is pretty scary stuff, if you look at the similes against Japan before 2nd WW.

Do you think other countries would just sit and watch China annex South China Sea? e.g. beat the crap out of Phillipines navy or Vietnam's naval force. (there are possibilities. e.g. Leaque of nations allow German's aggression on Poland) What is the risk of triggering a pretty nasty and serious regional conflict.

Is it truely for China real interest to promote military adventurism?
