the actual answer is (provided by my english teachers and references from books) that back in shakespeare's times, because people rarely take showers
(normally they have 3 showers in their whole life because they think that shower makes u sick (like..getting wet and cold)
those 3 showers were taken in: after being born, before getting married, and after u're dead)
so obviously their body odour builds up. The theatre it self are classified for different class of people la
the poor at the main floor would just gather up and watch the play, the rich people on 2nd floor would send their servants to distribute oranges for the poors to squeeze the juice on their body to eliminate the smell (the rich people don't do the same cause they probably have money to buy perfume or other forms of deodourant)
thats what the oranges are for =]
