1978年10月21日，一名澳洲的飛行員斐德列克·瓦倫提斯（Frederick Valentich）駕駛他的塞斯納（Cessna182L）單螺旋槳小型飛機，在飛往澳洲國王島（King Island）的一次例行貨運航班途中，他告知地面航管員說，他目擊一個“不是飛機”的不明飛行體盤旋在他的飛機前方，但是之後無線電通訊中斷，音訊全無，在經過大規模的搜救行動之後，仍未找到飛機和飛行員的任何蹤跡。
