專門在偏遠地區或有沒有可靠的地面網路通訊範圍的Inmarsat，客戶包括政府、援助機構、媒體及企業，當然也包括航空公司。其位於印度洋上空的I-4低軌通訊衛星，在客機失蹤後，就接收了由客機發出共多次的脈衝訊號，提出要跟通訊衛星「連接」，但由於馬航未有「幫襯」服務，故連接被拒，但就提供了飛機行蹤的僅有線索。技術人員同時發現，有關訊號的頻率，疑因多普勒效應而出現微小變化，於是展開分析計算，最終「推算」出飛機的大概位置。

不過，有關的「推算」，由於掌握的資料所限，因而是有可能出現誤差的，包括有關方面在計算時，是假設飛機以自動巡航速度即大概350節（約合648公里/時）飛行。而由於按MH370的位置和剩餘的油量，英國空難調查處認為，在偏遠的南印度洋海域中，油量可達範圍內根本沒有可供飛機降落的島嶼，故認為飛機極大可能墜毀，而馬來西亞政府隨後更單方面宣布飛機確認墜毀這個其實是推斷出來的事實。! d( g' Q( a3 w( B3 W
