It is built around aninlet called Queenstown Bay on LakeWakatipu, a long thin Z-shaped lake formed by glacial processes,and hasspectacular views of nearby mountains such as TheRemarkables,Cecil Peak,Walter Peak and just above the town;Ben Lomond and Queenstown Hill. TheQueenstown-Lakes District has a land area of 8,704.97 km²(3,361.01 sq mi) not counting its inland lakes (Lake Hawea,Lake Wakatipu, and Lake Wanaka). It has an estimatedresident population of 29,200 (June 2012 estimate).Its neighbouring towns include Arrowtown, Wanaka,Alexandra, and Cromwell. The nearest cities are Dunedin and Invercargill. Queenstown is nowknown for its commerce-oriented tourism, especially adventure and ski tourism.It is popular with young international and New Zealand and Australiantravellers alike.Thetown is the largest centre in CentralOtago, and the second largest in Otago after Dunedin. Oamaru is now the third largest. According tothe 2006 census, the usuallyresident population of the Queenstown urban area (including Fernhill, Frankton and Kelvin Heights) is 13,062,an increase of 22.1% since 2001. Thepopulation of the Queenstown ward at 30 June 2011 is 16,600.

皇后鎮是紐西蘭最知名的旅遊景點也不為過，居民僅約不到一萬人，但每年旺季時觀光客可以多達三十萬人，無論是紐西蘭當地居民或是外國觀光客，都把皇后鎮列為必去旅遊的景點之一。/ x3 ]7 d) J: K1 f
Queenstown的命名由來說法不一，誰取的名字甚麼時候取的也早已不可考，但大部分的人都會說這裡是最適合皇后居住的地方。單從外表來看一點也不錯，皇后鎮依山傍水，來自雪山冰河的南島第二大湖 Wakatipu 清澈見底，來過的人一定都有想在此定居的念頭。
