簡介﹕
When Graeme Souness signed David James from Watford for ?.3 million in the summer of 1992, he declared that the goalkeeper had the potential to be the best in the business.

James made his Reds debut on the opening day of the 1992-93 season in front of the live Sky TV cameras at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest and, although the home side won 1-0, all the talk was about James' outstanding individual display.

He continued to make sensational saves but there were also lapses of concentration, particularly on dealing with crosses that was a problem area. Eager to please, at times James was coming for crosses he had no right to come for and as a consequence was getting punished.

After letting four goals in at Anfield in the incredible 4-4 draw with Chesterfield in a League Cup tie Souness took his young keeper out of the limelight and brought back the experience of Bruce Grobbelaar.

The following season saw Souness trying to sell James and a swap deal with Southampton's Tim Flowers was on the cards. However, Flowers chose to move to Blackburn and it was the appointment of Roy Evans as Liverpool manager that saw James back in business.

He made a stunning match winning save from Everton winger Peter Beagrie in the 2-1 Anfield derby win over Everton in 1994 and with Bruce Grobbelaar leaving Liverpool, James inherited the number one jersey for the 1994-95 season.

As the Reds recognised last line of defence James helped Liverpool win the Coca Cola Cup at Wembley in 1995, making a crucial and spectacular save from Bolton's Alan Thompson with the scores at 2-1.

Unfortunately moments of brilliance were followed by moments of madness and he was dubbed, perhaps rather cruelly, 'calamity James' by the media. Despite Roy Evans' public show of faith in James the mistakes became all too regular and the manager eventually signed American Brad Friedel.

When Gerard Houllier took sole charge at Anfield, the writing was on the wall for James and he was sold to Aston Villa in 1999 with Sander Westerveld arriving as the new Anfield Number one.

簡介﹕
Tommy came through the Junior ranks at Anfield and signed professional forms for the club in October 1957 when he was 17 years old but had to wait 5 years before finally forcing his way into the first-team by replacing Jim Furnell a third of the way into the 1962-63 season. Lawrence played in goal for the last 29 matches of Liverpool's first year back in the First Division after an 8-year absence and would then miss only another four League fixtures over the next six seasons, being an 'ever-present' on three separate occasions.

He won a championship medal in his first full season between the posts (1963-64) - a feat he repeated two years later - and was also a member of the Liverpool side which finally brought the F.A. cup home to Anfield for the first time in the club's history. He was awarded a Scottish cap early in his career but rather surprisingly, considering he was a key member of such a successful club side, was only called on to represent his country (Scotland) on two further occasions. Sometimes criticised for being overweight, a fact which brought him the irreverent nickname of 'the Flying Pig', Tommy was a strong and brave 'keeper and one of the first to be used almost as a 'sweeper' by racing yards out of his goal to confront opposition forwards who had broken through on their own.

Ray Clemence had arrived from Scunthorpe and was being groomed as Tommy's successor but as the 1960's closed he was still very much Bill Shankly's first-choice between the posts. One miserable afternoon at Watford changed all that. Tommy might have done better with Barry Endean's header that sent the Reds skidding out of the F.A. cup quarter-final on February 21st 1970 but Shankly knew he could no longer rely on some the men who had served him so well during the middle of the previous decade. He had to plan for the club's future and when the team ran out at Anfield a week later against Derby County it was Ray Clemence who was wearing the jersey with No. 1 on its back. Tommy never played for Liverpool's first-team again and moved across the Mersey to join Tranmere Rovers in September 1971.

He was soon joined there by his old skipper Ron Yeats, who became manager at Prenton Park in April of the following year. Tommy played 80 times in the Football League for Tranmere but it is the 300+ times he represented Liverpool in First Division games for which he will be most remembered, including one year when the club finished runners-up to Leeds (1969) when he was beaten only 24 times during the whole League season, in which he played in every one of the 42 games.

簡介﹕
Gary Ablett was equally comfortable playing at left back or centre half and won his fair share of medals at Anfield.

Ablett was given his chance by Kenny Dalglish and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Charlton in December 1986, when he replaced the injured Alan Hansen. On his second appearance, and Anfield debut, he scored a magnificent goal in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in April 1987, and followed it up with another fine display in a 3-1 win over Everton at Anfield.

In the glorious title winning season of 1987-88 Ablett played the second part of the season at left back and did well, ably assisted by John Barnes, while the following season he only missed three games, covering for the injured Gary Gillespie and Hansen at centre half. In 1989 he won an FA Cup winners medal against Everton.

Although he had the occasional lapse in concentration, Ablett continued to impress when called upon and he was a firm favourite under Dalglish's reign as manager.

It was during the managerial reign of Graeme Souness that Ablett lost his place to Nicky Tanner and was sold across Stanley Park to Everton for ?50,000 in January 1992 to link up with former Red hero Peter Beardsley.

Further moves followed to Birmingham City and then Blackpool under Steve McMahon.

簡介﹕
Phil Babb began his career with Millwall and then made the move north to sign for Bradford City where he played as a midfielder and scored fourteen goals in eighty league appearances.

His move to Coventry City gave him the chance to prove his worth in the top flight and his progress was such that both Liverpool and Tottenham were keen to lure him away from Highfield Road. It was largely due to his performances in the 1994 World Cup in America for Ireland which persuaded then manager Roy Evans to splash out a record transfer fee for a defender to secure his services. Evans paid Coventry City ?.6 million for the Irish defender - and days later beat his own record by signing John Scales from Wimbledon.

Babb went on to play over one hundred and fifty matches for Liverpool, facing a fight for a place in the team in the 1 999/2000 season with several players competing for two central defensive slots. Good in the air and quick on the ground, Babb had been a regular in the Liverpool side during the Roy Evans days, but the 1998/99 season was a disappointing one as he missed large chunks of it through either injury or loss of form. In the Summer of 1999 G廨ard Houllier declared Babb free to leave Anfield if he so desired, whilst suggesting that while he remains at Anfield he could still have a large part to play in the club's future.

In January 2000, Babb was loaned out to Tranmere Rovers for a month and in the summer of 2000 he was released and is now with Sporting Lisbon.

簡介﹕
Stig Bjornebye's Anfield debut ended in a 5-1 defeat by Coventry City but thankfully things were to get better during his Liverpool career. It was a difficult start for the young left back, signed in 1992, and he only made occasional appearances during his opening months on Merseyside. In fact, at the end of season 1993-94 he was even loaned back to his former club Rosenborg.

Bjornebye finally displaced Julian Dicks in the team at the beginning of season 1994-95 and soon made the position his own. He played in the club's 1995 Coca-Cola Cup success at Wembley but joy soon turned to despair as he broke a leg a few days later in a match with Southampton at Anfield. The injury sidelined him for several months and he managed just two appearances throughout the following season as Jason McAteer and Rob Jones were the regular full backs.

Bjornebye's fortunes soon changed and he even managed to score the first goal of the Premiership on the opening day of the 1996-97 season when he netted after five minutes at Middlesbrough.

At international level he subsequently announced his retirement leaving behind many happy memories including being involved in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and also playing a major role in Norway's improved standing in world football.

Bjornebye has proved on a couple of occasions in his Anfield career that he is capable of breaking back into the first team after spending time frustrated on the sidelines. The start of the 1999/2000 season saws him battling with Dominic Matteo and Steve Staunton for the left back berth at Anfield and once more struggling to break into the first team, though he captained the reserves with distinction before becoming injured.

In March 2000 Stig joined Danish side Brondby on loan and then in the summer of 2000 he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers.

While Sir Matt Busby will always be remembered for re-building Manchester United and surviving the Munich air disaster he made his name as a player with Liverpool and enjoyed a life-long friendship with Bob Paisley, whose deeds in charge of Liverpool make him the most successful manager ever in English football.

A Scotland international from Lanarkshire, Busby joined Liverpool for ?,000 from Manchester City in March 1936 and was made captain. Originally an inside forward he had been switched to right half earlier in his career. It proved an inspired decision. Busby's wing half play contained outstanding elegance and grace and his use of the ball was brilliant.

He was skipper when Paisley signed as a young player from Bishop Auckland in 1939 and immediately took the new arrival under his wing. When war was declared Busby was among several Anfield players who joined the King's Liverpool Regiment.

Liverpool decided to make Busby club coach but before he could take up the

簡介﹕
The hero of Liverpool's first FA Cup triumph when he played for 117 minutes of the extra-time contest against Leeds at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins.

The player, his team-mates, manager Bill Shankly and right hand man and physio Bob Paisley kept Byrne's injury a secret from Leeds. Not only did Byrne complete the match and the half-hour extra period but also supplied the cross for Roger Hunt to score the first Liverpool goal in their 2-1 win.

"Gerry's collar bone was split and grinding together yet he played on in agony", said Shankly. "It was a performance of raw courage from the boy". Liverpool-born Byrne joined his home-town club as an amateur and signed professional in 1955. He had been put up for sale when Shankly arrived in December 1959 and one of the new manager's first acts was to remove him from the transfer list.

At home on either full back flank he settled down on the left partnered on the right by Chris Lawler. A solid tackler he was an ever present in the Second Division title winning side in 1962, won League Championship medals in 1964 and 1966 and collected two England caps before retiring through injury in 1969.

簡介﹕
Roy Evans' love affair with Liverpool began at the age of seven when he attended his first game at Anfield. As he grew older he went on to play at left-back for England schoolboys in 1963 before joining Liverpool as an apprentice two years later.

He made his full debut in 1969, playing 3 games in the 1969/70 season, and played occasionally at left-back for Liverpool during the seasons 1969/70 to 1973/74, but following Shankly's shock resignation in 1974 Bob Paisley persuaded him, at the age of 25, to direct his talents into coaching, and he became the youngest member of the famous 'Boot Room'. John Smith, the Chairman at the time, predicted: "We have not made an appointment for the present but for the future. One day Roy Evans will be our manager."

Appointed Reserve Team Coach, Roy won the Central League Championship in his first season, 1975, and went on to win it seven times in nine years, before Joe Fagan took over as manager from the retiring Paisley, and appointed him to the senior coaching staff, where he played a part in Liverpool's great triumphs under Fagan, including the Treble of 1983/84, and subsequently under Dalglish, including the Double of 1985/86.

After Dalglish had stunned everyone by resigning in 1991, Graeme Souness was brought in as manager. Evans was appointed Souness's assistant in 1993. Roy eventually became the Liverpool Manager in 1993/94 following the departure of Graeme Souness, and quickly returned a calming influence to the Club - chairman David Moores described him as: "The last of the Shankly lads". Evans was popular choice, and gave a great boost to the Club.

However he too struggled with worryingly lack-lustre displays from his players and the abysmal F A Cup appearance in 1996 against

Manchester United and their ill-advised Armarni suits, led to the damaging 'Spice Boy' tag being applied to his leading players.

This was a defining moment in retrospect as an F A Cup win would have given Evans an invaluable lift. As it was, despite winning the League Cup in 1994/95 and never finishing below 4th in the League after the season when he first took over, Roy was unable to deliver another cup or the League Championship which the Club and its fans demanded.

His transfer deals were only qualified successes, but his support and development of the likes of Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen in particular, stand as proof that he knew how to develop local talent. Evans to his credit reacted positively to the unusual decision to bring in a joint manager - G廨ard Houllier - to share the burden at the start of the 1998/99 season, and they did their best to make the partnership work.

The arrangement, however, was not a success, and Roy and the Club decided by mutual agreement that he would leave, making the sad announcement on 12th November 1998.

簡介﹕
The Bonnybridge-born Scotland centre back became the youngest captain in world professional football when he skippered his local club Falkirk at the tender age of 17 and Coventry paid £75,000 to sign him in 1978 before his 18th birthday.

When Joe Fagan succeeded Bob Paisley as Liverpool manager in the summer of 1983 he made Gillespie his first transfer capture at a cost of £325,000. There were two massive obstacles blocking his path to regular first team football: those magnificent defenders Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson. He was also hit by a string of injuries.

In his first season at Anfield, when Liverpool scooped the first treble in English football history by landing the League, European Cup and League Cup, Gillespie made just a single senior appearance and 22 the following season.

But the cultured defender had 24 outings in Liverpool's League and FA Cup double-winning season of 1985-86 under Kenny Dalglish and also figured in the championship campaigns of 1987-88 (playing in 35 of the 40 games) and 1990. After Graeme Souness' arrival as manager Gillespie moved to his boyhood favourites Celtic for £925,000 in 1991, later re-joining Coventry.

簡介﹕
Rated by many to be the most skilful centre half in the history of British football his game oozed elegance. The graceful Scotland international was a gifted player tailor-made for Liverpool's mid 1970's tactical development of building more patiently from the back, which brought them such huge success in England and Europe.

His control and vision was as effective in creating Liverpool attacks as in stopping the opposition's and his aptitude was underlined by his multi-sport prowess which also embraced international recognition at basketball, volleyball, squash and golf, a game at which he still excels.

Hansen, who captained Liverpool to the League and FA Cup double in 1986 under the management of his close friend Kenny Dalglish, was one of Bob Paisley's most inspired signings. He cost £100,000 from Partick Thistle in May 1977 and within 18 months had made the No 6 shirt his own.

His first great central defensive partnership was alongside Phil Thompson and in the 1980's Hansen formed a magnificent combination with Mark Lawrenson. When he retired through injury in 1991, a week after Dalglish's resignation as manager, he had collected three European Cup and eight title medals in his amazing harvest of honours. He is now a celebrated BBC football pundit.

簡介﹕
Kenny Dalglish signed stylish Swedish international centre half Glenn Hysen from under the noses of Manchester United in 1989.

The centre half, who arrived from Fiorentina for just ?25,000, had established quite a reputation, especially with his recent performance for Sweden against England and United desperately wanted to sign him. However, Dalglish quickly pounced to make him a Liverpool player.

Hysen made his Reds debut in the 1989 Charity Shield win over Arsenal at Wembley and gave an outstanding performance as the Reds fans quickly warmed to him. Strong in the air and strong in the tackle he was the perfect foil for Alan Hansen.

The silver-haired Hysen scored his first Liverpool goal at Anfield in the 9-0 destruction of Crystal Palace and went on to produce outstanding performances as Liverpool won the League Championship.

The following season was something of a struggle for Hysen. With Hansen ruled out for the whole season through injury, Hysen, skipper in Jockey's absence, found the burden tough and he was being caught out for pace. One example of that came in the extraordinary 4-4 draw with Everton.

Shortly after Graeme Souness took over the Anfield helm Hysen was allowed to leave the club, but not before he made a return to the team for a brief renaissance in the 1991-92 season. On leaving Liverpool he returned to Sweden.

簡介﹕
Graeme Souness' reign as Liverpool manager was severely criticised but let it be said that he did sign right back Rob Jones for a bargain ?00,000 from Crewe Alexandra in 1991.

Making his Reds debut at Old Trafford of all places, Jones performance against Manchester United is still to this day remembered by Liverpool supporters. Nothing significant in the actual game you might say as it finished 0-0 but his marking of Ryan Giggs was simply magnificent as the Welsh international hardly got a kick. Indeed Giggs was full of praise for the Reds defender by rating him as his most difficult opponent. High praise indeed.

Jones went on to finish a highly impressive first season by playing in the 1992 FA Cup victory over Sunderland at Wembley. International honours followed with England and he made a superb debut in the 2-0 win over France at Wembley.

However, there was injury heartbreak for Jones when he was forced to pull out of Graham Taylor's squad for the 1992 European Championships. It was a huge loss for the player and for the England team.

Over the next few years Jones established himself as the best right back in England with a series of energetic and powerful display's down the right, linking brilliantly with Steve McManaman, and it came something of a big surprise when he was left out of the England team for the vital World Cup qualifier with Holland in 1993, which England lost in controversial circumstances.

When new manager Roy Evans introduced the wing back system Jones filled it perfectly and added another medal to his collection when he played in the 1995 Coca Cola League Cup win over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

The following season Evans signed Jason McAteer from Bolton and he took the right wing back role with Jones switched to the left. It was a role Jones disliked but such was his professionalism he got on with the job without making a fuss.

Sadly injury then set in with back problems that restricted his appearances to just three in the 1996-97 season. He was released in May 1999 and tried his luck at West Ham United but his back problems continued to be a major problem and he was forced to retire from the game.
