Deportivo La Coruna have accepted a bid from Newcastle for Argentina defender Fabricio Coloccini.
A statement on Depor's official website confirmed the two clubs reached a verbal agreement last week and that has now been followed up with a formal written offer.
Depor claim the fee could rise to 13 million euros.
The statement read: 'Real Club Deportivo and Newcastle have agreed the transfer of Fabricio Coloccini to the English club. The clubs had reached a verbal agreement last week which was today confirmed in writing.'
The South American, 26, arrived at Deportivo in January 2005 from AC Milan and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best central defenders in the Primera Liga.
Coloccini has made no secret of his desire to move to St James' Park with his agent even suggesting his client would walk out on Depor if they tried to scupper the move.

Marseille president Pape Diouf expects Djibril Cisse to remain with the club this season, even though the France international continues to be the subject of inquiries from English sides.
Former Liverpool striker Cisse has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League, and he has a deal with OM that allows him to speak to any English club that comes in with an offer.
A number of Premier League teams have been linked with the 26-year-old, but Diouf confirmed no concrete bids have been made and that he expects OM's star striker to stay put for the time being.
'We agreed at the end of the 2007/08 season that if he was the object of a big offer coming from England, we would look at it,' Diouf said.
'The transfer window opened and I saw Djibril again to tell him, 'Djibril, I still agree with the promise we made but on condition that, from now on, we find a buying club very quickly, with a fixed price and that we find a sporting solution for your departure'.
'Unfortunately, none of these conditions have been met even though, and I must say it, Djibril is currently the object of inquiries from several clubs.
'Having discussed with Djibril recently, we have agreed that he will stay despite these offers.
'He has shown his love for this club. Djibril needs OM and OM need Djibril.'
The prospect of having Cisse on board for another season delights Diouf, who added: 'You don't find this type of player on the corner of every street.'
Cisse joined OM last summer on a permanent basis from Liverpool, having previously been on loan from the Reds.
