《寸土必爭》── 水土流失、土地退化
易經序卦云：「有天地，然後有萬物。」在世界各地不同民族文化當中，土地一般都被視為母親的象徵，西漢《淮南子》第七卷〈精神訓〉亦有提到「以天為父，以地為母」。然而，因為人類的不正當使用土地，致使水土流失，土地退化，今天，這位孕育生命的大地之母也開始自身難保。
水土流失不單代表表土的失去，更會引至極具嚴重的災害，例如山泥傾瀉、江河湖泊淤積、土地荒漠化、沙塵暴等，由於耕地減少，影響糧食供應，更會直接造成更大的生態危機。
黃河流域自古以來是中華民族的搖籃，也是古代文化發祥地之一，但在黃河中游的黃土高原，正是世界最大的黃土沉積區，跨越山西、陝西、甘肅、青海、寧夏及內蒙等省區，也是中國水土流失最嚴重的地區。長期以來，受地勢及自然氣候變化的影響，以及農民的過度開發，以致地表植被迅速消失，土質疏鬆，引致嚴重的水土流失，人們生命財產均受到摧殘和威脅。正因為問題嚴重，一班中國科學家，用了十多年的時間，不辭勞苦地往黃土高原山上跑，為的就是要以人力去對抗黃土。今天，經過十多年的努力，黃土終於開始變綠了。
除了黃土高原之外，本集亦走訪了歐洲的西班牙，以及西菲小國佛得角，深入了解當地土水流失的情況，了解不同的民族面對水土流失的態度，從而找出人與大自然平衡共存之道。
