Socotra has been tectonically isolated from Africa and Arabia for the past 18 million years, with its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora. Huge number of flora and fauna on Socotra are endemic, i.e., they are found nowhere else on Earth: 37% of Socotra’s 825 plant species, 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species. The island was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world natural heritage site in July 2008.

The tree can live to 5000 or 6000 years old. Its red sap was thought to be the dragon’s blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye, also inscribe as magical seals and talismans. Some scientists blame a lack of water caused by a decrease in seasonal cloud cover—and predict that many stands could disappear within a century.- l, s/ v! V1 t8 S7 Q

索科特拉島,印度洋西部一群島，屬也門哈達拉毛省領土。其位置在阿拉伯半島以南約350公里，非洲之角以東，阿拉伯海與亞丁灣的交接處。該群島由4島組成，群島面積3650平方公里，主島面積3635平方公里。2008年，聯合國教科文組織將該地列入世界遺產名錄，登錄名稱為索科特拉群島。tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb, m( @7 U9 l" X( Q. H* f
島上人口以阿拉伯人為主，說索科特拉語，主要城鎮Hadiboh人口約43000人，有機場。棗椰、煙草、畜牧業和漁業是島上經濟支柱。公仔箱論壇7 S' j$ `7 @& Q& b
根據島上的記載，早在公元52年，島民就已經在聖多馬的指引下皈依基督教。1507年，葡萄牙人來到島上，幫助島民擺脫了阿拉伯半島上伊斯蘭教國家的控制，但是4年以後葡萄牙人離開該島，使得島民又重新淪為Mahra蘇丹的臣民。1886年，同Mahra蘇丹國一道歸入英國保護，成為英國在印度洋上的重要基地。

好特別的地方與植物, 風化缺水是它的不幸也是它的卓越之處, 幸運是它地理上的隔離, 避免了商業化與人為的侵略, 使它仍可維持自然粗獷的景色, 保持其純真自然的美.

龍血樹號稱是地球上最長壽的樹種之一，最高齡可達6千歲，主要生長在非洲和亞洲南部等熱帶地區；其外型如同漏斗一般，可以有效接住每一滴雨水，而枝幹則像是渠道，將雨水導入樹根，因此即使在乾旱無雨的索科特拉島，它也能夠完全適應。
