How comes so many ABC don't understand what it is to be Chinese?

My point is so many ABC think like white people and by doing some Chinese activities like having dim sum lunches makes them feel like they know what it is all about.

Most ABC think they characterize Chinese by have Chinese food. Unfortunately, they can't even know how to order food in Chinese language. I hope they can study more chinese culture to keep the root for the future generation.

It all depends on the parents. Some will send their kids to Chinese school, speaking to them in Chinese and visit Asia often but some don't. My sister's kid are ABc but they understand and speak Cantonese and Mandarin. They can even read some simple stuff like restaurant menu and such.

It's all about the children's upbrining
They can only learn what they are exposed to
作者: Wiz33    時間: 2011-5-13 12:11 PM

Yep. Especially in the Bay area where you are exposed to a lot of Asian culture. There is no excuse if your kid does not at least understand one Chinese dialect.

If they're in the bay area or NY, they will expose to chinese culture more,
but if is in small town then all they will contact is the white or black in most case
Also depend what dialogue they speak at home, and if the family watch any chinese TV

I think that's really how their families raise them. Some parents of the ABC children tend to believe that ABCs are western and let it be in that way. Since most of those parents are busy working everything, they have no time to really teach them about Chinese cultures and the only thing they did is to go for dim sum every Sunday when they are off. That's why ABCs think going for dim sum is a very Chinese thing to do.

that is more like the parents' issue, they dont force them to learn or speak Chinese in the house, and end up wherever they go they only speak read listen to English.

I think the culture in the States is trying to melt you into their culture, one single stereo typing, and they are so emphasis their American Spirit.
