What an amazing turn of events for Arsenal football club, cumulating tothe highlight of the weekend just passed. In the past 3 weeks or so,Arsenal has convinced our distracters that there is still life andthere is still blood in this young Arsenal team.
At the tail end of Jan, we went on a run of 5 consecutive draws.Starting with a 1-1 draw with Everton, we proceeded to decimate ourseason by going on a goalless run of 4 matches against West Ham,Tottenham, Sunderland and Fulham. It really felt like we are becomingthe ham in the sandwich (totally helpless!) as we fall further behindin 5th place as Aston Villa creep up to overtake us while ManchesterUnited were streaking away at the top.
As all hell breaks lose and calls for Wenger’s head began to crescendo, the team found a second wind in March. The boys found their scoringboots and it was raining goals in the premiership and FA Cup. We didhave to struggle against Roma in Rome for the Champion’s league, butprevailing from the penalties seemed to have added an edge to theArsenal players. Instead of feeling fatigue, the players seemed to bemore determined to scrap and tackle and commit to a game with moregusto. With the defence holding firm, our performance in March allowedus to overtake Villa. (which has started to become more like their newnickname of Villalose)
The comeback of Arsenal have coincided with the return of Eduardo andWalcott, and also with Andrey Arshavin getting match fit by the games. The three players were so happy and eager to play that their attitudesshow on the pitch. Arshavin even had 9 stitches in his foot againstBlackburn at half time so that he can play the second half! With suchcommitment, its no wonder that he scored his first goal for us in thevery same game. As a whole, the three players’ enthusiasm has rubbedoff onto their teammates and even the grouchy Eboue has become moreactive and smiley, no doubt helped by his recent influx of goals.
It still seemed a near impossible task to catch the 3 above us, but allthat changed within the last 2 rounds of the BPL. Manchester Unitedwere thrashed by Liverpool 4-1 and then surrendered meekly to Fulhamwith a 2-0 score line. Chelsea tried hard but somehow, our nastyneighbour, Tottenham Hotspur, did us a huge favor by ensuring that a1-0 lead became a 1-0 final result that they can be proud of.
Is this the turning point that we are wishing for all season?
We are surging forward everyday with the improving match fitness andhealth of Arshavin. He brings with him experience, maturity and awillingness to get down dirty to get the job done. In Arshavin, Ibelieve Wenger has got himself the next 'Cantona'. This may be thestart of the Arsenal Dynasty.
With Fabregas and Adebayor coming back within the next 2 weeks, Arsenalis given one last chance to barge into the top 2 position of the BPL.With the top 3 to play against us in the remaining 8 games, it will bea cracking finale and I retain my right to dream of lifting thepremiership title together with the FA Cup and Champion League title!
