Police, coastguard and mountain rescue teams were alerted after a reported sighting of someone falling into the River Annan, in the Everholm area of Annan, in Dumfries and Galloway, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said boat searches of the river were carried out while a helicopter flew over the area. A shoreline search from Everholm to the river mouth at Solway was also undertaken by police and Moffat Mountain Rescue Team. The teams were stood down for the night as nothing was found.

Mr Benyon hit out at the insurance industry for what he said was a 'rather demeaning' attempt to highlight negotiations over future cover on the back of the latest floods. Ministers are locked in talks with insurers over the replacement for a 'safety net' deal to make sure those in flood risk areas can afford cover, which is due to expire next year.
The Flood Insurance Statement of Principles commits insurers to continue to offer insurance to existing customers where they are at significant risk, if there are plans in place to reduce that risk within five years. Town hall chiefs have warned that 200,000 are at risk of being priced out without a new deal being struck.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the Association of British Insurers, said the talks had reached a 'crisis point', accusing ministers of rejecting its solution.
